Come to a Taster Session
How do I join?
If you already have experience of playing samba, or
would like to join a taster session, send your details to
Taster Workshops
First step is to come along to a taster session, and really get a feel
for how you get on with the rhythms and the instruments. And remember, hardly anyone in the band had prior musical experience.
If this first experience inspires you and you want to take it a little further, we normally hold around three further sessions
which you can attend to learn a full samba piece and on the
final session we give a short performance for friends and family.
And then if you're really gripped by the samba bug and there are vacancies in the band you may be invited to start coming regularly to rehearsals and to learn the various
pieces that we play. We rehearse weekly on a Sunday evening at Leicester University. Summer tends to be the busy gig season but we get
bookings throughout the year. So the opportunity is potentially there to play with us at live gigs.
What will it cost?
The initial taster session is free.
The cost of the three follow-on learning sessions is
£3/£2 (concessions) per week which is about the same as our normal band subs
which all members pay of £10/£7 (concessions) per month for general band upkeep.
What will I need?
You will need a pair of earplugs – it's not
that we're bad, just very loud! You don't need your own instruments or
any experience to join. You must be aged at least 16 (14 or 15 if accompanied by a parent or guardian), but there is no
upper age limit! For performances the group wears clothes in individual
styles but in the band colours of black, bright orange and/or bright
purple. A Sambando Jacket can be also purchased to keep you warm and distinctively Samba!
